Cognitive and mood symptoms, although common in almost all cases soon after the trauma, disappear after a few weeks and should only be of concern when they get worse over time.

How to confirm the diagnosis

To confirm the existence of post-traumatic stress it is recommended to consult a psychologist, to clarify the symptoms and to start the appropriate treatment, if necessary.

However, it is possible to suspect this disorder when, over the course of a month, at least 1 symptom of experiencing and avoidance appears, as well as 2 symptoms of agitation and mood.

How the treatment is done

The treatment of post-traumatic stress should always be guided and evaluated by a psychologist or psychiatrist, as it needs to be constantly adapted to help each person overcome their fears and alleviate the symptoms that arise.

In most cases, treatment begins with psychotherapy sessions, in which the psychologist, through conversations and teaching activities, helps to discover and overcome the fears developed during the traumatic event.
