The white mallow, scientific name Sida cordifolia L. is a plant with medicinal properties that has tonic, astringent, emollient and aphrodisiac properties.

This plant grows on vacant land, pastures and even in sandy soils, not needing much care. Its flowers are large, with yellow or white petals and the central region is orange and can reach 1.5 meters in height.

Other names of white mallow are Bala, Kungyi and Country mallow.

What is it for

White mallow is good for urinary tract infection, sore throat fever, rheumatism, cramps and anxiety, improving sexual strength.

In addition, the plant has a depressing effect on the central nervous system, being a good option to calm down. It can also be used to lower both blood pressure and heart rate, and lowers blood sugar. It also has analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

How to use

It can be used in the form of tea prepared with industrialized dry leaves.

  • For tea: Place 1 teaspoon in a cup and cover with 180 ml of boiling water, cover with saucer and wait 3 minutes or until warm. Take properly strained up to 2 times a day.

Contraindications

It should not be used at the same time as medications containing caffeine or with coffee because the combination can be life-threatening. It should also not be used during pregnancy, breastfeeding, in case of hypertension, heart disease, thyroid or prostate disorders, or by people taking MAO inhibitor drugs, such as antidepressants.

Side effects

White mallow, when used in large quantities, can cause side effects such as insomnia, anxiety, nervousness, increased blood pressure, memory loss or even stroke.
