Tiorfan has racecadotril in its composition, which is a substance indicated for the treatment of acute diarrhea in adults and children. Racecadotril works by inhibiting the encephalinases in the digestive tract, allowing the encephalins to exert their action, reducing the hypersecretion of water and electrolytes in the intestine, making the stools more solid.
This medicine can be purchased in pharmacies for a price of about 15 to 40 reais, which will depend on the pharmaceutical form and the packaging size and can only be sold upon presentation of a prescription.
How to use
The dosage depends on the dosage form the person is using:
1. Granulated powder
The granules can be dissolved in water, in a small amount of food or placed directly in the mouth. The recommended daily dose depends on the person's weight, being advised 1.5 mg of medicine per kg of weight, 3 times a day, at regular intervals. Two different doses of granulated Tiorfan powder, 10 mg and 30 mg, are available:
- Children aged 3 to 9 months: 1 sachet of Tiorfan 10 mg, 3 times a day; Children from 10 to 35 months: 2 sachets of Tiorfan 10 mg, 3 times a day; Children from 3 to 9 years old: 1 sachet of Tiorfan 30 mg, 3 times a day; Children over 9 years: 2 sachets of Tiorfan 30 mg, 3 times a day.
Treatment should be carried out until the diarrhea stops or for the period of time recommended by the doctor, but it should not exceed 7 days of treatment.
2. Capsules
The recommended dose of Tiorfan capsules is one 100 mg capsule every 8 hours until the diarrhea stops, not to exceed 7 days of treatment.
Who should not use
Tiorfan is contraindicated in people who are hypersensitive to any of the components of the formula. In addition, any of the presentations of Tiorfan is contraindicated for children under 3 months of age, Tiorfan 30 mg is contraindicated for children under 3 years of age and Tiorfan 100 mg should not be used in children under 9 years of age.
Before taking Tiorfan, the doctor should be informed if the person has blood in their stools or suffers from chronic diarrhea or caused by antibiotic treatment, has prolonged or uncontrolled vomiting, has a kidney or liver disease, has lactose intolerance or you have diabetes.
This medicine should also not be used in pregnant women or women who are breastfeeding.
