The remedies indicated for the treatment of canker sores are intended to help decrease pain, facilitate the healing process and eliminate the bacteria that develop in the wound, which can appear in various places of the oral mucosa, such as lips, tongue and throat.
Treatment is usually not necessary, because the cold sore usually resolves on its own in a few days, however, if the cold sore does not disappear in a week or two or if it is very large or very painful, it may be necessary to resort to the use of medications.
As the cause of thrush is unknown, treatment is usually carried out only to relieve pain, speed up the cure of thrush, decrease the frequency and severity of its onset and prevent the development of infections.
1. Topical protectors
These are remedies in the form of gel or spray, which when applied, form a protective film, or adhesives, which act to protect the affected region, reducing friction and allowing temporary pain relief. The example of a protective remedy is Omcilon A Orobase.
2. Local anesthetics
Topical local anesthetics, such as procaine or benzocaine, for example, work by temporarily reducing pain. Examples of remedies for thrush with local anesthetics in the composition are Aftliv, Hexomedine, Bismu Jet and Amidalin, for example.
3. Policresulene

4. Antiseptics
Rinsing with oral cleansers or applying an antiseptic gel locally, such as chlorhexidine or triclosan, for example, helps prevent the development of infections in the region. Examples of products with antiseptics in the composition are Perioxidin, Oral-B Mouthwash or Colgate mouthwash, for example.
5. Topical corticoids
In more severe cases, where the cold sore is very large and lasts for a long time, it may be necessary to resort to the use of topical corticosteroids, such as triamcinolone, clobetasol or fluocinolone, for example, but only if recommended by the doctor. Examples of remedies with corticosteroids in the composition are Omcilon or Oral Mud.
6. Sucralfate
The sucralfate solution can also be used for the treatment of foot-and-mouth disease, as it has a protective effect, helps to reduce pain and speeds up the healing of wounds and mouth ulcers. Sucralfate is marketed under the name Sucrafilm.
7. Amlexanox
Amlexanox is an anti-inflammatory, which helps to relieve pain and decrease the size of the lesion.
Generally, the products used in the treatment are accompanied by adherence-facilitating agents, which fix better on the mucosa, since common medications are easily removed by saliva, making contact with the ulcer difficult.
The exact cause for the development of cold sore is still unclear, and can arise in adults or children. Possible causes involve minor local trauma, such as the use of braces or brushing, allergies to any food or medication, gastroesophageal reflux, stress, vitamin C deficiency, folic acid, iron and zinc, or certain infectious or systemic diseases.
Therefore, if the cold sore arises frequently, for the treatment to be effective, it is important to seek a general practitioner or dentist to investigate and treat these situations. In cases of severe cold sore, the use of topical medications may not be enough and the doctor may have to prescribe drugs with systemic action, such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, among others, for the treatment to be effective.
Non-pharmacological treatment
Some measures that can be taken to prevent thrush are:
- Use of toothpaste without detergents and soft toothbrush; Strengthening oral hygiene to prevent bacterial infections; Perform mouthwash with saline solutions; Avoid very hot, spicy, very acidic or hard foods and alcoholic and carbonated drinks; Apply ice directly to the lesions for 10-minute periods to provide temporary pain relief.
In addition, heat must be avoided, as it favors bacterial proliferation.
