Fosfomycin is an antibiotic that is used to treat infections in the urinary tract, such as acute or recurrent cystitis, painful bladder syndrome, urethritis, bacteriuria during asymptomatic during pregnancy and to treat or prevent urinary tract infections that arise after surgery or medical interventions.

Fosfomycin is available in generic or under the trade name Monuril, which can be purchased at pharmacies, upon presentation of a prescription.

How to use

The contents of the phosphomycin envelope should be dissolved in a glass of water, and the solution should be taken on an empty stomach, immediately after preparation and preferably at night, before bedtime and after urinating. After starting treatment, symptoms should disappear within 2 to 3 days.

The usual dosage consists of a single dose of 1 envelope, which may vary according to the severity of the disease and according to medical criteria. For infections caused by Pseudomonas, Proteus and Enterobacter, it is recommended to administer 2 envelopes, administered at 24 hour intervals, in the same way as described previously.

To prevent urinary infections, before surgical interventions or instrumental maneuvers, it is recommended that the first dose be administered 3 hours before the procedure and the second dose, 24 hours later.
