How to use Gaviscon

The use of Gaviscon varies according to the formulation and can be:

  • Oral suspension or sachet: Take 1 to 2 dessert spoons or 1 to 2 sachets, after 3 meals a day and before bed. Chewable tablets: 2 chewable tablets as needed, after main meals and before bed. Do not exceed 16 chewable tablets in one day.

If after 7 days of medication administration the symptoms do not improve, the gastroenterologist should be contacted.

Side effects of Gaviscon

Side effects of Gaviscon are rare and include allergic manifestations, such as hives, redness, difficulty breathing, dizziness or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.

Contraindications for Gaviscon

Gaviscon is contraindicated for individuals who are hypersensitive to any component of the formula and for children under 12 years of age.

After ingesting Gaviscon, wait 2 hours for the use of other medications, especially antihistamine, digoxin, fluoroquinolone, ketoconazole, neuroleptics, penicillin, thyroxine, glucocorticoid, chloroquine, disphosphonates, tetracyclines, atenolol (and other beta blockers), sulfate quinolone, alendronate, sodium fluoride and zinc. This precaution is important, since calcium carbonate, one of Gaviscon's ingredients, acts as an antacid and can decrease the absorption of these drugs.
