Niclosamide (atenase)

Niclosamide is an antiparasitic and anthelmintic remedy used to treat intestinal worms problems, such as teniasis, popularly known as solitary, or hymenolepiasis.

Niclosamide can be purchased from conventional pharmacies under the trade name Atenase, under medical prescription, in the form of tablets for oral ingestion.

Indications of Niclosamide

Niclosamide is indicated for the treatment of teniasis, caused by Taenia solium or Taenia saginata, and of hymenolepiasis, caused by Hymenolepis nana or Hymenolepis diminuta.

How to use Niclosamide

The use of Niclosamide varies according to age and the problem to be treated, and the general guidelines include:

Teniasis

Age	Dose
Adults and children over 8 years	4 tablets, in a single dose
Children between 2 and 8 years old	2 tablets, in a single dose
Children under 2 years of age	1 tablet, in a single dose

Hymenolepiasis

Age	Dose
Adults and children over 8 years	2 tablets, in a single dose, for 6 days
Children between 2 and 8 years old	1 tablet, in a single dose, for 6 days
Children under 2 years of age	Not suitable for this age

Normally, the dose of Niclosamide should be repeated 1 to 2 weeks after the first intake of the drug.

Side effects of Niclosamide

The main side effects of Niclosamide include nausea, vomiting, bellyache, diarrhea, headache or bitter taste in the mouth.

Contraindications for Niclosamide

Niclosamide is contraindicated for patients with hypersensitivity to any of the components of the formula.
