What is it for
- Oral suspension: Nystatin oral suspension is used to treat fungal infections in the mouth, caused by Candida albicans or other sensitive fungi, also known as "thrush" disease. This infection can also affect other portions of the digestive tract, such as the esophagus and intestines; Vaginal cream: Nystatin vaginal cream is indicated for the treatment of vaginal candidiasis; Cream: Nystatin cream is indicated for the treatment of fungal infections, such as diaper rash in children and treatment of irritations that occur in the perianal region, between the fingers, armpits and under the breasts.
How to use
Nystatin should be used as follows:
1. Nystatin solution
To apply the drops, you must wash your mouth properly, including cleaning dental prostheses. The contents should be kept in the mouth for as long as possible before swallowing, and babies should be given half the dose on each side of the mouth.
- Premature and low weight children: 1mL, 4 times a day; Infants. 1 or 2 mL, 4 times a day; Children and adults: 1 to 6 mL, 4 times a day.
After the symptoms disappear, the application should be kept for another 2 days to avoid recurrence.
2. Nystatin vaginal cream
The cream should be introduced into the vagina, with an applicator, for 14 consecutive days. In more severe cases, it may be necessary to use larger quantities.
If the symptoms do not disappear within 14 days, you should return to the doctor.
3. Dermatological cream
Nystatin is usually associated with zinc oxide. To treat the baby's rash, the dermatological cream must be used with each diaper change. To treat irritation in other regions of the skin, it must be applied twice a day, in the affected regions.
Possible side effects
The main side effects of nystatin include allergy, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. In the case of vaginal application it can cause itching and burning.
Who should not use
Nystatin should not be used during pregnancy or lactation, unless directed by the doctor.
You should also not use it in case of hypersensitivity to nystatin or the other components of the formula. Treatment should be stopped and a doctor should be consulted immediately if the person is irritated or allergic to this medicine.
