Gardnerella mobiluncus is a type of bacteria that, like Gardnerella vaginalis sp. , normally inhabits the female genital region of almost all women. However, when these bacteria multiply in a disorderly manner, most of the time as a consequence of the decrease in the immune system, they can generate an infection known as bacterial vaginosis, which is a genital infection characterized by yellowish and strong-smelling vaginal discharge.
Generally, the Gardnerella mobiluncus bacterium is seen in the Pap smear, also known as a colpocytology test, which collects samples of secretions and tissue from the vaginal region and cervix, which can demonstrate lesions or the presence of bacteria suggestive of this infection.
Although not considered a sexually transmitted infection, this bacterium can be transmitted sexually when it is found in large quantities, however it does not usually cause signs or symptoms in the partner, at most symptoms of urinary tract infection that are quickly resolved.
Symptoms of infection by Gardnerella sp.
Symptoms of infection by Gardnerella sp. are similar to those of a urinary infection, and can be noticed:
- Itching in the genital region; Pain when urinating; Pain during intimate relationships; Inflammation in the foreskin, glans or urethra, in the case of men; Yellowish discharge and the smell of poor fish, in the case of women.
In women, the initial diagnosis is made during a routine gynecological consultation, in which symptoms indicative of infection are verified, especially the presence of vaginal discharge and the characteristic smell. The confirmation is made through the Pap smear, in which a small scraping of the uterus is made and sent to the laboratory for analysis. In the presence of infection by this bacterium, it is usually described in the test "presence of supracytoplasmic bacilli suggestive of Gardnerella mobiluncus ".
In some cases, it is possible that the person has the infection but does not show signs or symptoms. In such cases, the infection is fought by the body itself and the immune system, when it is balanced.
How to treat
The treatment for infection caused by Gardnerella mobiluncus , when symptoms exist, is done with the use of antibiotics, such as Metronidazole, in the form of pills, in a single dose or for 7 consecutive days.
