The symptoms of hydronephrosis arise due to the swelling of the kidney that is caused by the accumulation of urine in this organ as a result of an obstruction in the urinary flow. Characteristic symptoms of hydronephrosis include:
- Fever; Swelling of the kidney, located in the region of the fundus, lateral of the back; Severe and intermittent kidney pain due to the overfilling of the kidney or its obstruction; Displacement of the kidney downwards, a condition known as renal ptosis; Bright red blood in the urine or pink urine; Urinary tract infection with the presence of pus in the urine; Pain or discomfort in the bladder region; Kidney stone; Nausea and vomiting may occur.
Chronic hydronephrosis, a disease with slow and progressive evolution, may not generate symptoms or produce only episodes of pain on the side of the affected kidney.
Hydronephrosis treatment
Treatment for hydronephrosis can be done with medication to reduce inflammation of the kidney or in some cases surgery to solve the cause of the obstruction of the ureter that is preventing the correct passage of urine.
