Mononucleosis symptoms

The initial symptoms of infectious mononucleosis (kiss disease) include a general feeling of malaise that lasts from a few days to a week, fatigue, fever above 38ºC, sore throat and swelling in the neck.

In addition to the inflammation of the throat, pus may form in the form of whitish plaques in the mouth and throat, which can be mistaken for tonsillitis, for example.

Other signs and symptoms of mononucleosis include:

Headache; Yellowish skin; Swelling around the eyes; Abdominal pain, as the spleen begins to swell and the liver can become inflamed.

Despite the symptoms, mononucleosis is curable when the treatment is done correctly. The treatment of infectious mononucleosis can be done with rest, intake of about 2 liters of water per day, analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs prescribed by the doctor and gargling with salt water for sore throat.

Infantile mononucleosis symptoms

Symptoms of childhood mononucleosis include sore throats, pus in the throat, high fever, above 38ºC and nausea in the neck. In addition, the child or baby may refuse to eat due to sore throats and be more grumpy and tearful due to general malaise.

Transmission of mononucleosis

The virus that causes mononucleosis can be transmitted through saliva, coughing, sneezing and sharing glasses or cutlery with an infected person. Therefore, it is very important to avoid giving mouth kisses to an infected person and not sharing cutlery or glasses to avoid becoming contaminated.
