Bisacodyl

Bisacodyl is a laxative medication that stimulates defecation because it promotes bowel movements and softens stools, facilitating their expulsion.

The drug can be sold commercially under the names Bisalax, Dulcolax or Lactate Perga and is produced by the laboratories DM Dorsay and Boehringer Ingelheim and can be purchased in pharmacies in the form of a pill, pill or suppository.

Indications

Bisacodyl is indicated in cases of constipation and in preparation for diagnostic procedures, in the pre- and postoperative period and, under conditions that one wishes to evacuate with little effort, after surgery, for example.

This remedy works by stimulating bowel movements and promoting the accumulation of water inside the intestine, facilitating the elimination of feces.

How to use

How Bisacodil is used for treatment depends on the form of the medication and should be taken or applied after the doctor's recommendation.

Drugs and tablets: it is taken orally, and in adults and children over 10 years of age, 1 to 2 pills of 5 to 10 mg should be taken and in children of 4 to 10 years of age only 1 5 mg pill at bedtime; Suppositories: suppositories must be removed from the wrapper and inserted into the rectum, the suppositories having an effect 20 minutes after application. Adults and children over 10 years of age should apply a 10 mg suppository for immediate effect.

To have a good result, these medications should not be broken or chewed, with the onset of action between 6 to 12 hours.

Side effects

The most common side effects of Bisacodil include stomach pain, colic, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea and dehydration.

The prolonged and excessive use of this laxative can cause loss of fluids, minerals and a decrease in potassium in the blood, which can compromise the functioning of the heart.

Contraindications

Bisacodil is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any component of the formula, children under 4 years of age or pregnant women.

In addition, it is contraindicated in patients with appendicitis, severe abdominal pain associated with nausea and vomiting or in cases of intense dehydration and, in hereditary conditions of galactose and / or fructose intolerance.
