The risk of developing cancer due to the use of a cell phone or any other electronic device, such as radios or microwaves, is very low because these devices use a type of radiation with very low energy, known as non-ionizing radiation.
Unlike ionizing energy, used in X-ray or computed tomography machines, the energy released by cell phones is not proven to be enough to cause changes in body cells and lead to the appearance of brain tumors or cancer in any part of the body.
However, some studies have reported that cell phone use may favor the development of cancer in people who have other risk factors, such as family cancer or cigarette use, and therefore this hypothesis cannot be completely eliminated, even to a very low degree, and further studies on the subject need to be done to reach any conclusions.
How to decrease cell phone radiation exposure
Although cell phones are not recognized as a probable cause of cancer, it is possible to reduce exposure to this type of radiation. For this, it is recommended to decrease the use of cell phones directly on the ear, giving preference to the use of headphones or the cell phone's own speaker system, in addition to, whenever possible, avoid keeping the device too close to the body, like in pockets or bags.
During sleep, to avoid constant contact with radiation from the mobile phone, it is also suggested to leave it at least a distance of half a meter from the bed.
