Milk of magnesia is mainly composed of magnesium hydroxide, which is an action substance that decreases acidity in the stomach and is able to increase water retention inside the intestine, softening the stool and favoring intestinal transit. Because of this, milk of magnesia is mainly used as a laxative and antacid, treating constipation and excess and acidity in the stomach.

It is important that the consumption of this product is done under the guidance of the doctor, because when used in quantities above the recommended, it can cause abdominal pain and severe diarrhea, which can result in dehydration.

Milk of magnesia should be indicated by the doctor according to the symptoms presented by the person and with the purpose of its use, because the consumption of very high amounts of this milk can have consequences for health, and therefore it is recommended that it be used according to medical recommendation.

Although the main use of milk of magnesia is due to its laxative function, excessive consumption can lead to abdominal pain and diarrhea, which can also be accompanied by dehydration. In addition, this product is contraindicated for people with kidney disease and for patients with allergies to magnesium hydroxide or any of the components of the formula.

How to take

The use of milk of magnesia may vary according to the purpose and age, in addition to the medical recommendation:

1. As a Laxative

  • Adults: take about 30 to 60 ml a day; Children between 6 and 11 years old: take 15 to 30 ml a day; Children between 2 and 5 years: take about 5 ml, up to 3 times a day;

2. As Antacid

  • Adults and children over 12 years old: take 5 to 15 ml, up to 2 times a day; Children between 2 and 11 years: take 5 ml, up to 2 times a day.

When used as an antacid, Milk of Magnesia should not be used for more than 14 consecutive days without the doctor's guidance.

3. For skin

To use Milk of Magnesia to reduce underarm and foot odor and fight bacteria, it must be diluted before use, being recommended by adding an equivalent amount of water, for example diluting 20 ml of milk in 20 ml of water, then passing the solution on the face using a cotton pad.
