Simvastatin is a drug indicated to reduce the levels of bad cholesterol and triglycerides and increase the levels of good cholesterol in the blood. High cholesterol levels can cause coronary heart disease due to the formation of atherosclerosis plaques, which lead to narrowing or clogging of blood vessels and consequently chest pain or myocardial infarction.
This medicine can be purchased in pharmacies as a generic or with the trade names Zocor, Sinvastamed, Sinvatrox, among others, upon presentation of a prescription.
How to take
The initial dose of simvastatin is usually 20 or 40 mg daily, taken as a single dose in the evening. In some cases, the doctor may decrease or increase the dose.
What is the mechanism of action
Simvastatin lowers bad cholesterol levels by inhibiting an enzyme in the liver, called hydroxymethylglutaryl-co-enzyme A reductase, reducing cholesterol production.
Who should not use
This medicine should not be used in people who are hypersensitive to any of the components of the formula and who have liver disease. In addition, it should also not be used in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and children.
