Syphilis is a serious sexually transmitted disease that, when properly treated, has a 98% chance of cure. The cure for syphilis can be achieved in just 1 or 2 weeks of treatment, but when it is not treated or is not treated properly, it can last for 2 years or more.
The most common cause of treatment abandonment is to think that the disease has already been overcome, since there are no apparent symptoms and, therefore, it is important to follow all medical guidelines until the doctor says that it is no longer necessary to carry out the treatment because syphilis is cured.
Does syphilis cure spontaneously?
Syphilis does not cure itself and there is no spontaneous cure for this disease. However, after the wound appears, even without treatment, it is possible for the skin to heal completely, but that does not mean that there was a natural cure for syphilis, but a progression of the disease.
When the person has no symptoms, what may be happening is that the bacteria is now spreading through the body silently. If treatment is not done, the disease may appear in the secondary form, leading to the appearance of spots on the skin. Without treatment, these symptoms can disappear on their own and the bacteria can then affect the organs and systems, giving rise to tertiary syphilis.
Thus, the disappearance of wounds and spots on the skin does not indicate the cure of syphilis, but the evolution of the disease, and the only way to eliminate these bacteria from the body is through the use of antibiotics.

How the treatment is done
Generally, treatment to cure syphilis is done with weekly Penicillin injections, such as Benzetacil, for example. The concentration of penicillin, the number of doses and the days on which they should be taken vary according to the time the disease has been installed in the individual.
Tests that prove a cure for syphilis
The tests that test for a cure for syphilis are the VDRL blood test and the CSF test.
The cure of syphilis is achieved when the VDRL and CSF tests are considered normal, between 6 and 12 months after the start of treatment. Tests are considered normal when there is a decrease of 4 titrations in the amount of antibodies circulating in the blood, for example:
- VDRL drops from 1/64 to 1/16; VDRL drops from 1/32 to 1/8; VDRL drops from 1/128 to 1/32.
This means that it is not necessary for VDRL values to be zero to say that a cure for syphilis has been achieved.
After reaching the cure, the person can be contaminated again, in case he / she comes in contact again with the bacterium that causes the disease, therefore, the use of condoms is recommended in all sexual relations.
