Some popular forms and tests promise to indicate the sex of the baby that is developing, without having to resort to medical examinations, such as ultrasound. Some of these tests include assessing the shape of the pregnant woman's belly, observing specific symptoms or the appearance of the skin and hair.
However, these tests are based only on popular beliefs, built over several years, which do not always give a correct result and, therefore, are not confirmed by science. The best way to find out exactly what the baby's gender is is to have an ultrasound scan in the second trimester, which is included in the plan for prenatal consultations, or a blood test for fetal sexing.
Still, in the following table, we indicate 11 popular tests that can be done at home for fun and which, according to popular belief, can actually indicate the sex of the baby:

Extra test: needle in the thread
This test consists of using a needle with thread on the pregnant woman's belly and observing the movement of the needle to find out if it is a boy or a girl.
To perform the test, the pregnant woman must lie on her back and hold the thread, leaving the needle hanging over her belly, as if it were a pendulum, without making any movement. Then you should observe the movement of the needle on the pregnant belly and interpret according to the results below.
Result: girl! Result: boy!To know the sex of the baby, the movement of the needle must be evaluated. So the sex of the baby is:
- Girl: when the needle keeps turning in the form of circles; Boy: when the needle is stopped under the belly or moves back and forth.
But be careful, as well as the tests indicated in the table, the needle test also has no scientific proof and, therefore, the best way to know the sex of the baby is to do the ultrasound after 20 weeks of gestation or the blood test for fetal sexing.
How to really confirm the baby's sex
From 16 weeks of gestation it is already possible to know if it is a boy or a girl through obstetric ultrasound. However, there are also other tests that can be used before 16 weeks of gestation, such as:
- Pharmacy test: and known as Intelligender and it is similar to the pregnancy test, in that it uses the pregnant woman's urine to assess the presence of certain hormones and to identify the baby's sex. This test can be done from the 10th week of gestation, but it is not reliable if the woman is pregnant with twins. See how to do this test. Blood test: also called a fetal sex test, it can be performed from the 8th week of pregnancy and does not need a medical prescription. However, this test is not offered by SUS.
In addition to all these forms, there is also the Chinese table to know the sex of the baby, which, again, is a popular test, developed by popular beliefs and which has no scientific confirmation.
