Ertapenem is an antibiotic indicated for the treatment of moderate or severe infections, such as intra-abdominal, gynecological or skin infections and must be administered through an injection into the vein or muscle by a nurse.
This antibiotic, known commercially as Invanz, is produced by the Merck Sharp & Dohme Pharmaceutical laboratory and can be used by adults or children.
Indications for Ertapenem
Ertapeném is indicated for the treatment of intra-abdominal, gynecological infections, skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections and pneumonia. It can also be indicated for the treatment of septicemia, which is an infection caused by bacteria in the blood.
In addition, it can be used to prevent infection at the surgical site after colorectal surgery in adults.
How to use Ertrapenem
Usually, for adults, the dose is 1 gram per day, administered into the vein for 30 minutes or through an injection into the gluteus given by the nurse.
In children between 3 months and 12 years of age, the dose is 15 mg / kg, twice a day, not exceeding 1 g / day, through injection into the vein.
The duration of treatment can vary between 3 and 14 days depending on the type and severity of the infection.
Side effects of Ertrapenem
Side effects of this antibiotic include: headache, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, as well as complications in the perfusion vein.
In children, diarrhea, dermatitis at the diaper site, pain at the infusion site and changes in exams and blood may occur.
Contraindications for Ertrapenem
This drug is contraindicated for patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its components or to other drugs in the same class, as well as patients intolerant to local painkillers.
