Esetamine is a substance indicated for the treatment of depression resistant to other treatments, in adults, which must be used in conjunction with another oral antidepressant.

This drug is not yet marketed in Brazil, but it has already been approved by the FDA to be marketed in the United States, under the trade name Spravato, to be administered intranasally.

What is it for

Sethamine is a drug that must be administered intranasally, associated with an oral antidepressant, for the treatment of depression resistant to other treatments.

How to use

This medication should be administered intranasally, under the supervision of a healthcare professional, who should monitor blood pressure before and after administration.

Spravato should be administered twice a week for 4 weeks. The first dose should be 56 mg and the next can be 56 mg or 84 mg. Then, from the 5th to the 8th week, the recommended dose is 56 mg or 84 mg, once a week, and from the 9th week, 56 mg or 84 mg can be administered only every 2 weeks, or at the discretion of the doctor.

The nasal spray device releases only 2 doses with a total of 28 mg of escetamine, so that one dose is placed in each nostril. Thus, to receive a dose of 56 mg, 2 devices must be used, and for a dose of 84 mg, 3 devices must be used, and one must wait about 5 minutes between the use of each device.

Who should not use

This remedy is contraindicated in people with hypersensitivity to the components of the formula, in people with aneurysm, with arteriovenous malformation or with a history of intracerebral hemorrhage.

Possible side effects

Some of the most common side effects that can occur with the use of escetamine are dissociation, dizziness, nausea, sedation, dizziness, decreased sensitivity in certain regions of the body, anxiety, lethargy, increased blood pressure, vomiting and feeling drunk.
