Fluphenazine is an antipsychotic known commercially as Flufenan.
This medication is for oral and injectable use, which improves the psychotic states by acting by blocking neurotransmitters, causing changes in the functioning of the central nervous system.
Fluphenazine should only be administered under medical supervision and should not be used in children under 6 years of age.
Fluphenazine Indications
Psychosis: schizophrenia; manic-depressive individuals; chronic neurogenic pain.
Side effects of Fluphenazine
Eye changes; weight gain; altered musculature; inability to remain seated; somnolence; decreased reflexes; difficulties in carrying out voluntary movements.
Contraindications for Fluphenazine
Children under 6 years old; diseases accompanied by coma; individuals with brain damage; individuals with cardiovascular diseases; hypersensitivity to Fluphenazine;
How to use Fluphenazine
Oral use
Adults and children over 12 years
- Start treatment with 0.5 to 10 mg daily, in divided doses every 6 or 8 hours. The dose can be carefully increased up to 20 mg per day.
Children aged 6 to 12 years
- Start treatment with 0.25 to 3.5 mg daily, in divided doses every 4 or 6 hours. The maximum dose is 10 mg per day.
Warning: Do not take antacid or antidiarrheal together with Fluphenazine.
Injectable use
Adults and children over 12 years
- Inject 25 mg of Fluphenazine every 2 weeks.
