Symptoms of amoebiasis can vary, but in general are:
- Abdominal pain; Mild or acute diarrhea with the presence of blood or mucus; Fever and Chills.
In the most severe cases this infection spreads through the bloodstream reaching the liver, lungs and even the brain. The skin, around the buttocks and genitals, can also become infected.
Amoebiasis can be fatal depending on the volume of amoebas ingested and also on the individual's immune status. The risk groups are children and the elderly.
Treatment for amoebiasis
Treatment for amebiasis is done by taking:
- Single dose of 2g or 500 mg, 3 times a day for 5 days of Secnidazole, or 750 mg, 3 times a day for 10 days of Metronidazole, in case of extraintestinal amebiasis, for example.
In addition, it is important to drink plenty of water and take home-made serum daily for electrolyte balance.
