- How to Use Triamterene
Triamterene is the active substance in a diuretic indicated for the treatment of edema associated with heart failure and liver cirrhosis.
This oral medication interferes with the reabsorption of sodium in the kidneys, leading to sodium and water excretion and potassium retention.
Indications of Triamterene
Edema (associated with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis and nephrotic syndrome).
Side Effects of Triamterene
Diarrhea; nausea; increased potassium in the blood.
Contraindications for Triamterene
Pregnancy Risk B; Breast-feeding; do not use the product if the blood potassium is greater than 5.5 mEq / L (normal potassium: 3.5 to 5.0 mEq / L).
How to Use Triamterene
Oral use
During or just after the meal.
Adults
- Start with 25 to 100 mg daily, in divided doses. The maintenance dose should be established according to the clinical response.
Dose limit for adults: 300 mg per day.
Children
- Start with 2 to 4 mg per kg of weight, in divided doses. The maintenance dose can reach up to 6 mg per kg of weight per day.
