Thiabendazole is an antiparasitic medication known commercially as Foldan or Benzol.

This medication for oral and topical use is indicated for the treatment of scabies and other types of ringworm on the skin. Its action inhibits the energy of the parasites' larvae and eggs, which end up weakened and eliminated from the organism.

Tiabendazole can be found in pharmacies in the form of ointment, lotion, soap and pills.

Indications of Tiabendazole

Scabies; strongyloidiasis; cutaneous larva; visceral larva; dermatitis.

Side Effects of Tiabendazole

Nausea; vomiting; diarrhea; lack of appetite; dry mouth; Headache; vertigo; somnolence; burning skin; flaking; redness of the skin.

Contraindications for Tiabendazole

Pregnancy risk C; lactating women; ulcer in the stomach or duodenum; Hipersensibility to any of the formula's components.

How to use Tiabendazole

Oral use

Scabies (Adults and Children)

  • Administer 50 mg of Tiabendazole per kg of body weight, in a single dose. The dose should not exceed 3g per day.

Strongyloidiasis

  • Adults: Administer 500 mg of Tiabendazole for every 10 kg of body weight, in a single dose. Be careful not to exceed 3 g per day. Children: Administer 250 mg and Tiabendazole for every 5 kg of body weight, in a single dose.

Cutaneous larva (adults and children)

  • Administer 25 mg of Tiabendazole per kg of body weight, twice a day. Treatment should last 2 to 5 days.

Visceral larva (Toxocariasis)

  • Administer 25 mg of Tiabendazole per kg of body weight, twice a day. Treatment should last 7 to 10 days.

Topical Use

Ointment or lotion (Adults and children)

Scabies

  • At night, before going to sleep, you should take a hot bath and dry your skin well. Subsequently, apply the medication on the affected areas by pressing gently. The following morning, the procedure should be repeated, however, applying the medication in a smaller amount. The treatment should last for 5 days, if there is no improvement in symptoms it can be continued for another 5 days. During this treatment it is important to boil the clothes and sheets to avoid any risk of renewing the infection.

Cutaneous larva

  • Apply the product on the affected area, pressing for 5 minutes, 3 times a day. Treatment should last 3 to 5 days.

Soap (adults and children)

  • The soap should be used as a complement to the treatment with the ointment or lotion. Just wash the affected areas during the bath until you get enough foam. The foam must dry and then the skin must be washed thoroughly. When leaving the bath apply the lotion or ointment.
