Cinacalcete is a substance widely used in the treatment of hyperparathyroidism, as it has a function similar to calcium, binding to receptors that are in the parathyroid glands, which are behind the thyroid.
In this way, the glands stop releasing excess PTH hormone, allowing the calcium levels in the body to remain well regulated.
Cinacalcete can be purchased from conventional pharmacies under the trade name Mimpara, being produced by Amgen laboratories in the form of tablets with 30, 60 or 90 mg. However, there are also some formulations of the drug in generic form.
Price
The price of Cinacalcete can vary between 700 reais, for 30 mg tablets, and 2000 reais, for 90 mg tablets. However, the generic version of the medication usually has a lower value.
What is it for
Cinacalcete is indicated for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism, in patients with end-stage chronic renal failure and undergoing dialysis.
In addition, it can also be used in cases of excess calcium caused by parathyroid carcinoma or in primary hyperparathyroidism, when it is not possible to have surgery to remove the glands.
How to take
The recommended dose of Cinacalcete varies according to the problem to be treated:
- Secondary hyperparathyroidism: the initial dose is 30 mg per day, however it must be adequate every 2 or 4 weeks by the endocrinologist, according to the levels of PTH in the body, up to a maximum of 180 mg per day. Parathyroid carcinoma or primary hyperparathyroidism: the starting dose is 30 mg, but can be increased up to 90 mg, according to blood calcium levels.
Possible side effects
Some of the most common side effects of using Cinacalcete include weight loss, decreased appetite, convulsions, dizziness, tingling, headaches, coughing, shortness of breath, stomach pain, diarrhea, muscle aches and excessive tiredness.
Who cannot take
This medicine should not be used by people with allergies to the Calcinete or any component of the formula.
