Prolotherapy, or injectable therapy, is a medical technique used to treat joint pain. The technique consists of using injections to regenerate injured tissues, such as inflamed tendons and ligaments, which cause pain and discomfort to the patient.
Prolotherapy involves applying a solution through a capillary orifice in an injured area. This application is interpreted by the body as a new lesion and enters a healing process, to double the tissue's ability to regenerate, thus ensuring the effectiveness of the technique.
There are three types of solutions used in prolotherapy, they are: chemical irritants (phenol), osmotic agents (glycerin and hypertonic glucose) and chemotactic agents (derived from cod liver oil).
There are several benefits provided by prolotherapy, including strengthening the musculature and increasing its elasticity. The technique is suitable for athletes or anyone who may suffer joint injuries. However, it must be applied by a qualified professional, to avoid possible problems, such as increased pain after application. Subsequent examinations should be carried out to monitor the regeneration of the injuries.
