Cephalexin is an antibiotic that serves to treat urinary tract infection, among other ailments. It can be used during pregnancy as it does not harm the baby, but always under medical guidance.
According to the FDA classification, cephalexin is at risk B when used during pregnancy. This means that tests were carried out on animal guinea pigs but no significant changes were found in them or in the fetuses, however tests were not carried out on pregnant women and their recommendation is at medical discretion after assessing the risk / benefit.
According to clinical practice, the use of cephalexin 500mg every 6 hours does not seem to harm the woman or harm the baby, being a safe treatment option. However, it should only be used under the direction of the obstetrician, only if very necessary.
How to take cephalexin in pregnancy
The mode of use during pregnancy should be according to medical advice, but it can vary between 250 or 500 mg / kg every 6, 8 or 12 hours.
Can I take cephalexin while breastfeeding?
The use of cephalexin during breastfeeding should be done with some caution as the medication is excreted in breast milk, between 4 to 8 hours after taking a 500 mg tablet.
If the woman has to use this medication, she may prefer to take it at the same time the baby is breastfeeding, because then, when it is time for her to breastfeed again, the concentration of this antibiotic in breast milk is lower. Another possibility is for the mother to express milk before taking the medication and offer it to the baby while she cannot breastfeed.
