Cefixime is an antibiotic that can be used to treat ear infection or urinary tract infection, when indicated by the doctor. It is sold commercially under the name Cefnax, Denvar and Suprax, and needs a prescription to be purchased.
This medication is a broad spectrum oral antibacterial, very slow to absorb, but it is effective in several situations.
What is it for
Cefixime is an antibiotic that can be indicated to treat diseases such as ear infection, earache, tonsillitis, acute sinusitis, acute or chronic bronchitis, infected bronchiectasis, pneumonia, acute cystitis, urethritis, uncomplicated pyelonephritis, uncomplicated urethral gonorrhea and uncomplicated endocervical gonorrhea.
How to take
This medicine can be taken from 12 years of age, as directed by a doctor. The dose can vary from 200 to 400 mg per day, in a single dose or in 2 equal doses.
For example: In the case of urethral or cervical gonorrhea (uncomplicated) give 400 mg as a single dose. In case of uncomplicated urinary tract infection, take a single daily dose of 200 mg.
Side effects
Cefixime is a very well tolerated antibiotic and adverse effects rarely appear, however symptoms such as pain in the belly, diarrhea, nausea, poor digestion and intestinal gases can appear. Very rarely, signs of shock, angioedema, hives, kidney failure, increases in ALT and AST, for example, may appear.
Contraindications
It should not be used during pregnancy because it is not known if its use is safe, nor is it known if it passes through breast milk, and therefore it should not be used during breastfeeding. It should also not be used by people allergic to penicillin.
