Cefuroxime is an oral or injectable medicine, known commercially as Zinacef.
This medication is an antibacterial, which acts by preventing the formation of the bacterial wall, being effective in the treatment of pharyngitis, bronchitis and sinusitis.
Indications for Cefuroxime
Tonsillitis; bronchitis; pharyngitis; gonorrhea; joint infection; infection of the skin and soft tissues; bone infection; infection after surgery; urinary infection; meningitis; earaches; pneumonia.
Side effects of Cefuroxime
Allergic reactions at the injection site; gastrointestinal disorders.
Contraindications for Cefuroxime
Pregnancy risk B; lactating women; individuals allergic to penicillins.
How to use Cefuroxime
Oral use
Adults and Teens
- Bronchitis: Administer 250 to 500 mg twice a day for 5 to 10 days. Urinary tract infection: Administer 125 to 250 mg twice a day. Pneumonia: Administer 500 mg twice a day.
Children
- Pharyngitis and tonsillitis: Administer 125 mg twice a day for 10 days.
Injectable use
Adults
- Serious infection: Administer 1.5 g every 8 hours. Urinary tract infection: Administer 750 mg every 8 hours. Meningitis: Administer 3 g, every 8 hours.
Children over 3 years old
- Serious Infection: Administer 50 to 100 mg per kg of body weight per day. Meningitis: Administer 200 to 240 mg per kg of body weight daily.
