Protos is a drug that has hydrated strontium ranelate in its composition, indicated for the treatment of osteoporosis, a disease caused by the gradual loss of bone mass with age, which especially affects women after menopause and the elderly. It can also be used on men at high risk of suffering a fracture, if other drugs cannot be used.
This medicine can be purchased in pharmacies, with the presentation of a prescription, for a price of about 140 to 250 reais, depending on the size of the package.
How to take
The recommended dose is a 2g sachet, dissolved in about 30 mL of water, once a day, orally, preferably 2 hours after meals, as its effectiveness is reduced in the presence of food, milk and derivatives. The best time to take is before bed, due to its slow absorption.
Possible side effects
The most common side effects that may occur during treatment with Protos are muscle pain, skin hypersensitivity reactions, increased blood cholesterol levels, insomnia, headache, changes in consciousness, loss of memory, dizziness, paresthesia, vertigo, myocardial infarction, venous thromboembolism and bronchial hyperreactivity.
In addition, poor digestion, increased intestinal gas, hepatitis, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal and gastrointestinal pain and gastroesophageal reflux, eczema, swelling in the limbs, and increased blood creatine phosphokinase can also occur.
Who should not use
This medication should not be used in people with hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of the components present in the formula, people with a history of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, who are temporarily or permanently immobilized or with a medical history of ischemic heart disease, peripheral and / or cerebrovascular disease.
In addition, it should also not be used in people with uncontrolled hypertension, under 18, pregnant women or women who are breastfeeding.
