Indications

Epilepsy; Lennox-Gastault syndrome; and prophylactic treatment of migraine.

Side effects

Abdominal pain; anorexia; nausea; weight loss; changes in taste; decreased ability to concentrate and memory; confusion; speech disorders; emotional instability and mood disorders; depression; behavior changes; changes in walking; paresthesia; dizziness; somnolence; asthenia; changes in vision; diplopia; psychotic symptoms; aggressiveness and leukopenia.

Contraindications

Pregnancy; breast-feeding; kidney and liver failure.

Important:

  • The use of topiramate with phenytoin increases its concentrations and interacts with other antiepileptics; Treatment with topiramate may decrease the effects of contraceptives; Taking topiramate should not be stopped abruptly; Topiramate is not advised in acute migraine cases.
