Topamax is a medication used to treat epilepsy, Lennoxx-Gastaut syndrome, in children over 2 years of age, and is also used in the preventive treatment of migraine in adults. This medicine uses topiramate as an active substance and is available on the market in the form of capsules and coated tablets that act on the central nervous system.
Topamax can be commercially found as a generic medicine from the companies: Ache, EMS, Eurofarma, NatureĀ“s Plus, Sandoz or Sigma Pharma.
Indications
Epilepsy; Lennox-Gastault syndrome; and prophylactic treatment of migraine.
Side effects
Abdominal pain; anorexia; nausea; weight loss; changes in taste; decreased ability to concentrate and memory; confusion; speech disorders; emotional instability and mood disorders; depression; behavior changes; changes in walking; paresthesia; dizziness; somnolence; asthenia; changes in vision; diplopia; psychotic symptoms; aggressiveness and leukopenia.
Contraindications
Pregnancy; breast-feeding; kidney and liver failure.
Important:
- The use of topiramate with phenytoin increases its concentrations and interacts with other antiepileptics; Treatment with topiramate may decrease the effects of contraceptives; Taking topiramate should not be stopped abruptly; Topiramate is not advised in acute migraine cases.
