Chlorhexidine is a substance with antimicrobial action, effective in controlling the proliferation of bacteria on the skin and mucous membranes, being a product widely used as an antiseptic to prevent infections.

How it works
Chlorhexidine, at high dosages, causes the precipitation and coagulation of cytoplasmic proteins and bacterial death and, at lower doses, leads to a change in the integrity of the cell membrane, which results in an extravasation of low molecular weight bacterial components
What is it for
Chlorhexidine can be used in the following situations:
- Cleaning the newborn's skin and umbilical cord to prevent infections; Maternal vaginal washing in obstetrics; Hand disinfection and skin preparation for surgery or invasive medical procedures; Cleaning and disinfection of wounds and burns; Oral washing in periodontal disease and disinfecting the mouth to prevent pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation; preparing dilutions for cleaning the skin.

Products with chlorhexidine
Some examples of topical products that have chlorhexidine in their composition are Merthiolate, Ferisept or Neba-Sept, for example.
For oral use, chlorhexidine is present in lower amounts and generally associated with other substances, in the form of gel or rinse. Some examples of products are Perioxidin or Chlorclear, for example.
Possible side effects
Although well tolerated, chlorhexidine can, in some cases, cause skin rash, redness, burning, itching or swelling at the application site.
In addition, if used orally, it can cause stains on the surface of the teeth, leave a metallic taste in the mouth, a burning sensation, loss of taste, peeling of the mucosa and allergic reactions. For this reason, prolonged use should be avoided.
Who should not use
